At NAB 2014, Adobe previewed big new updates to Premiere and today they unleashed them on the masses. These updates include nearly all current Creative Cloud applications, a handful of new iOS apps, tighter integration between devices and a new subscription plan for photographers. Adobe is taking this opportunity to also announce their entrance into the arena of hardware.
Fourteen of the sixteen apps making up Creative Cloud are getting brand new versions. Adobe has focused a lot of attention on providing an overall performance upgrade through the Mercury Playback Engine. This allows these apps to run smoother and shorten overall work time.
More iOS Apps
Mobile integration is also a key focus of Adobe for this major update. Not only are they releasing a new suite of mobile apps that are all Creative Cloud compatible, meaning any saved presets you have on your Creative Cloud account are available to you. Perhaps best of all, these apps are all free.
These three new apps are Adobe Sketch, Adobe Line, and Adobe Photoshop Mix. Sketch is a more social media type of app that allows you to share your creative ideas with other users to get feedback from peers. Line “combines organic drawing with precision drawing” for the iPad, allowing for perfect lines and shapes. Photoshop Mix is essentially just Photoshop on the iPad, with many of the same tools and power you’d find on the desktop version. Again, all three connect to the Creative Cloud, allowing you to work on your workstation or iPad near seamlessly.
These three new apps are supplemented by Adobe’s two new products, Adobe Ink and Adobe Slide. Adobe Ink is a powerful stylus that that provides great control when drawing on the iPad. It even includes additional features such as the ability to access the Cloud Clipboard, letting you copy and paste between multiple devices. Adobe Slide, the companion to Ink, is a multi- functional digital ruler for the iPad. It’s main use is to help draw straight lines and perfectly balanced shapes. While fantastic companions for Adobe’s new mobile apps, the apps will still work without the pair.
Adobe is also offering a couple of new pricing plan for photographers, which is $9.99 per month. The plan includes Photoshop CC, Lightroom (desktop, mobile and web versions), and Photoshop Mix integration. The other new pricing option is actually a change for students, with a lowered price of $19.99 per month for the first year of their subscription.
As mentioned above, the wave of updates to Adobe’s current Creative Cloud apps will be available today for free, along with their trip of new mobile apps (also free). Their new hardware products, the Adobe Ink stylus and Adobe Slide digital ruler are shipping today to the United States for $199.99 for the pair, with international distribution coming later this year.
This is simply the tip of the iceberg. The amount of changes coming to Adobe’s Creative Cloud are staggering, enough so that they are streaming a live event at New York City’s Lincoln Center to go over the new changes and products. This event will be at 10AM Pacific time, 1PM Eastern.
