Atomos Shogun Update: DNxHD Recording, 3D LUTs, Power Station & More

At BVE 2015 Atomos announced several new features coming to their Shogun 4K recorder, including new 3D LUTs, DNxHD recording, Avid DNxHR 4K recording, playback, play-out and editing, all coming by the end of February in a free update.

With perhaps the most affordable and feature filled 4K recorder on the market, the Shogun has been a popular addition to Atomos’ line of digital recorders. This has a lot to do with its compatibility with numerous 4K workflows and cameras, such as the Sony A7s and A7II and the Panasonic GH4. However Atomos has also always been great at consistently updating their products, not only with fixes and tweaks, but full on new features. This is a key feature when buying technology these days, as it’s always frustrating when a company forgoes regular updates for a “brand new” product as a cash grab. Atomos co-founder and CEO Jeromy Young had this to say:

“Shogun is already the perfect partner for the exceptional Japanese 4K cameras. With this announcement we are the only brand to have a 4K solution for Apple, Adobe and Avid workflows for video capture directly from the sensor of Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon cameras.” said Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos. “We are driving 4K content pick up for the 4K hungry world and Post Production professionals are demanding Shogun on set because we deliver a real solution. We are the only Monitor Recorder with 10-bit 4K HDMI recording, the only Monitor Recorder with Microsoft’s ExFAT recording beyond a 4GB size limit and now the only Monitor Recorder with recording options for Apple, Adobe and Avid.”

Atomos has their full product line on display at BVE 2015, including the upcoming Power Station accessory. The Power Station includes:

  • Flexible dual USB power source to charge high-powered 2A devices (e.g. iPad)
  • 3 DC out to power cameras, monitors and lighting sources
  • DC input for fast charging of included dual 5200mAh 4 cell batteries
  • Front LED display tells you how much power is left from a maximum of 5A output
  • Top & bottom mounting holes fore flexible mounting options

With the high number of power dependent camera setups, this is a great addition to any kit. It also follows Atomos’ “continuous power” philosophy, granting all the extra power you could need for a single camera set up. This is especially helpful for remote locations, or situation where you find yourself with limited battery options.

You can see Atomos at BVE 2015 right now, in booth H30. For more information on the Shogun update and all Atomos products, check out the press releases below, as well as visit Atomos.com

Atomos Announce World’s First Avid DNxHR 4K Recording in the Shogun, shipping February.

At BVE 2015, Atomos showcase 4 exciting new Shogun features, including a BVE exclusive world first, released for free to existing and new users of Shogun for the end of February 2015.

Melbourne, Australia – 24th February, 2015: BVE 2015 exclusive, Atomos announce the implementation of Avid DNxHR 4K recording, playback, play-out and editing for the highly acclaimed Shogun. Atomos also confirm that DNxHD recording, 3D LUTs and 4KUHD to HD Down Convert will additionally be included in the free firmware update at the end of February 2015. Atomos is the “keystone” brand in the 4K mass market, bridging the camera world & Post Production world by integrating functionality that streamlines Post Production directly at the point of capture.

Atomos is already one of the fastest growing companies in Pro Video and with Shogun sales fast approaching 10,000 units in the field this trend is set to continue in 2015. The reason for the success is a unique combination of cutting edge technology, an intuitive user interface and an open standards approach that together creates a faster, higher quality and more affordable end to end production schedule for end users. Perhaps the most exciting result for Atomos however is the creativity we see that Shogun unleashes for our end users – as seen in the latest show reel we created for BVE (https://vimeo.com/120444933)

The impressive Shogun has a long list of world firsts in the 4K/HD Monitor/Recorder space including first with 12G SDI & 4K HDMI connections, first with SDI to HDMI & HDMI to SDI conversion, first with pro monitor pixel density in excess of 300ppi and the first with balanced XLR audio in/out. By adding DNxHR to this list, filmmaking creatives can now work inside an AVID framework with a greater range of resolutions from lightweight yet highly detailed proxies, to mastering-quality HD or 4K. Additionally, since DNxHR is backward compatible with DNxHD you can mix both types of media on the same timeline.

Atomos can be found at BVE Expo, London Excel, 24-26 February 2015, Hall/Stand: H30 or see www.atomos.com and www.bvexpo.com for more details. For further details about Avid DNxHR and DNxHD see http://www.avid.com/us/industries/workflow/dnxhd-codec.

Melbourne, Australia – 24th February, 2015: At BVE 2015 Atomos will highlight their award winning touchscreen accessories for cameras that enable a faster, higher quality and more affordable end to end production. Outside of showing the existing range, Atomos will announce the world’s first implementation of AVID DNxHR recording for 4K, the first fully working sample of Power Station which is a must-have power management solution for the camera rig and the first post launch demonstration of the 4K Shogun complete with larger batteries and a custom developed Sun hood for outside applications.

Recording all content to 4:2:2 10-bit, giving the user the choice of HQ/422/LT bit rates, ability to create Favorite/Reject XML file markers and (unlike other ProRes monitor/recorders on the market) not restricted by FAT32 file size limits in the recording (e.g. 4GB or 2.5min). Outside of getting hands on with the product, you will also see the latest improvements made to Shogun including a larger capacity 4 cell battery, an optional Sun Hood accessory available in black or yellow, the opportunity to see the latest DNxHR enabled Shogun firmware and see a selection of amazing footage captured by Shogun users in the field (https://vimeo.com/120444933).

Also on show is the latest product from Atomos, the Power Station. The new Power Station, scheduled for release in Q2 2015 utilizes Atomos’ patented continuous power technology to give cameramen extra control over power consumption in remote field locations. With a flexible dual USB power source the Power Station allows users to charge high-powered 2A devices (e.g. iPad), along with 3 DC out to power cameras, monitors and lighting sources. The DC input also means that the Power Station is a charging station, providing a fast charging solution for the included dual 5200mAh 4 cell batteries. The front LED display will let you know exactly how much power is left from a maximum of 5A output and the top & bottom mounting holes provide flexible mounting options no matter what the application.

“The speed of innovation continues unabated at Atomos.” said Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos. “Hot on the heels of a successful Shogun launch, we now are proud to announce enhanced functionality for the Shogun, brand new Shogun accessories and we are confident our Power Station product will not only prove to be popular with Video professionals but introduce the entire photography market to the Atomos brand. You can’t help but be excited by an all in one power and charging solution”.

At the heart of Atomos recording solutions are the Ninja and Samurai recorders which have broken new ground in production by combining recording, monitoring, playback and deck functionality all in one easy to operate, portable device. Atomos also produce the world’s lightest recorder, the Ninja Star, which is perfect for Drones, RC Helicopters, or any POV set-up and offers edit ready format recording with ProRes.

Every Atomos recording option will record pristine, uncompressed images straight from the sensor of DSLRs or video cameras, or even switcher or ISO feeds from live events, directly to inexpensive, removable 2.5″ HDDs or SSDs, in a ready-to-edit format: Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD. Atomos recorders speed up any production workflow, improve recorded image quality and replace multiple devices for a fraction of their combined cost.

Atomos can be found at BVE Expo, London Excel, 24-26 February 2015, Hall/Stand: H30 or see www.atomos.com and www.bvexpo.com for more details.
