Interview: DPs of New Netflix Documentary, “Descendant”

The Descendant documentary was officially released on October 21 via Netflix and in select theaters. We had an opportunity to talk to two of the creative minds behind the transcendent film: DPs Justin Zweifach and Zac Manuel.

The documentary, which won the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, follows the descendants of the enslaved Africans on an illegal ship that arrived in Alabama in 1860 as they seek justice and healing when the craft’s remains are discovered. The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Margaret Brown (The Great Invisible; The Order of Myths) and is EP’d by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter.

DPs Justin and Zac trusted Canon’s EOS C300 Mark II, C300 Mark III, as well as the Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 and EF 24-105 F4 lenses to enhance the film’s powerful storytelling and produce a striking visual aesthetic.
