ARRI’s ALEXA Mini camera has been the talk of the industry for a little while now. So we made sure to stop by their booth at NAB 2015 to see what ARRI’s Michael Jonas could tell us about the ALEXA Mini, and its place within ARRI’s family of cameras.
According to Jonas, the ALEXA Mini was born out of their customer’s desire for a more compact and maneuverable camera that could be used in tight spaces. At just 5 pounds (the magic number for this year’s hot new cameras) the ALEXA Mini is perfect for such shooting, as well as gimbals, handheld shots, and possibly even larger drones. It records ProRes 4K to CFast 2.0 cards, though Jonas made mention that we’ll see ARRI RAW added around IBC in September. The ALEXA Mini does not have an on board monitor, but can make use of the AMIRA’s MF-1, or transmit its signal via built in wi-fi for external monitoring. Jonas does mention they will be releasing a separate LCD control panel for the ALEXA Mini in the future.
ARRI will begin shipping the ALEXA Mini in mid May 2015 for $45,000.
