NAB 2016: Zeiss' All Metal Lens Gears Make Their Lenses Follow Focus Ready

Using a follow focus with Zeiss lenses just got a whole lot easier with the new Zeiss Lens Gears. Designed with an all metal body, the Zeiss Lens Gears are tailor made to fit the Loxia, Milvus and Otus lens families. We spoke with Zeiss’ Snehal Patel at NAB 2016 on how this will expand the use of these lenses, especially for cinema applications.

Key Features:

  • Quick mounting – no tools needed
  • Made of lightweight aluminum
  • Hardened surface coating
  • Features a 0.8 pitched gear
  • Follow focus runs smoother than ever before
  • No more screwdrivers, worn-out belts or protruding straps

The ZEISS Lens Gear Rings are made of premium aluminum with a hardened surface coating, are slid onto the relevant lens and attached to the focus ring of the lens simply by turning the two counteracting rings. “This means the ZEISS Lens Gears can be attached in a flash – and you don’t even need any tools to do so,” explains Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses.

The ZEISS Lens Gears are available in four different sizes: mini, small, medium and large. “They fit on the different lenses of various diameters precisely and securely,” continues Casenave. “The use of a follow focus system enables optimal focusing, and the ZEISS camera lenses receive functions resembling those of a full-fledged movie lens.” This now allows customers to achieve professional results with the camera lenses and makes any handling difficulties a thing of the past.

The ZEISS Lens Gears are supplied with a rubber-covered band, the GumGum, which features an adhesive surface. This means the inner diameter can be reduced accordingly, thus supporting other lens sizes. The GumGum also protects against scratches and other damage to the focus ring of the lens.
The prices and sizes for each gear are as follows:

  • Mini: $179 – 62 – 69 mm (60 – 67 mm with GumGum)
  • Small: $189 – 71 – 77 mm (69 – 75 mm with GumGum)
  • Medium: $199 – 78 – 84 mm (76 – 82 mm with GumGum)
  • Large: $209 – 86 – 93 mm (84 – 91 mm with GumGum)
