Blackmagic Design has once again made it big at Sundance, with four films shot on Blackmagic Cameras, and another 35 using DaVinci Resolve Studio.
The standout from all of this is the Pocket Cinema Camera, used on all four of this year’s list of films. Having used it frequently ourselves (even using it alone to cover NAB one year) I can attest to the Pocket Cinema Camera continuing to be a rockstar. As mentioned in our interview with the director and DPs on “Operation Avalanche” last week, it’s light weight design and great image quality is perfect for numerous types of shooting. Especially when you want to be on the go as well as discreet.
This year’s Sundance films that used Blackmagic cameras include:
“The 4th,” shot by DP Shane Bruce Johnston and DP Charles J. Gibson with Blackmagic Cinema Cameras and Pocket Cinema Cameras, and color graded by Mark Todd Osborne with DaVinci Resolve Studio
It’s the Fourth of July in Los Angeles, and Jamie, a broke illustrator who is behind on his rent, tries to throw a cookout while his overbearing roommate is out of town, but everything seems to go wrong. Director and screenwriter: Andre Hyland – Cast: Andre Hyland, Johnny Pemberton, Eliza Coupe, Yasmine Kittles, Anna Lee Lawson, Paul Erling Oyen. World Premiere
“All These Sleepless Nights,” shot by Director and DP Michal Marczak with Pocket Cinema Camera
What does it mean to be awake in a world that seems satisfied to be asleep? Kris and Michal push their experiences of life and love to a breaking point as they restlessly roam the city streets in search of answers, adrift in the euphoria and uncertainty of youth. Director: Michal Marczak – World Premiere
“Manoman,” shot by DP Steven Cameron Ferguson with Pocket Cinema Camera
When Glen attends primal scream class, he releases something from deep within that knows no limits. Director and screenwriter: Simon Cartwright
“Operation Avalanche,” shot by DPs Jared Raab and Andrew Appelle with Pocket Cinema Camera
In 1967, four undercover CIA agents were sent to NASA posing as a documentary film crew. What they discovered led to one of the biggest conspiracies in American history. Director: Matt Johnson, Screenwriters: Matt Johnson, Josh Boles – Cast: Matt Johnson, Owen Williams, Josh Boles, Ray James. World Premiere
Of course, DaVinci Resolve Studio was a big presence as well, with 35 films using the color grading software turned editor. Some highlights include Spike Lee’s “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall” (with Colorist Roman Hankewycz of Harbor Picture Company) and Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers” with Colorist Mark Todd Osborne. The full list can be found in Blakmagic’s press release below.
Blackmagic Design’s cameras have swiftly become go to cameras for their strong image capture and affordable price. Combined with their recent conversion of DaVinci Resolve from color grader to full on editor, a full Blackmagic production pipeline can now be achieved by a wide variety of filmmakers on any budget.
