Canon Releases Two New DSLRs: The EOS Rebel SL1 and Rebel T5i

In their quest to ensure that the entire planet has a Canon in their hands, Canon has released a two more additions to the EOS Fleet: the EOS Rebel T5i and the Rebel SL1.

The Rebel T5i is the more expensive of the two at $899.99 ESRP, and the SL1 is cheaper at $799.99. However, these are prices for the kit, and the bodies alone will cost $749.00 and $649.99 for the T5i and SL1 respectively.

At first glance, there is almost no difference between the two. The SL1 is actually smaller, and is touted to be the “world’s smallest and lightest” DSLR, as well as being the cheapest in the EOS line. Beyond that, it shares most of the same features as its slightly older sibling, the T5i. Except the SL1 lacks the T5i’s articulating screen, trading it for a touch screen of all things.

Here is what some others are saying about Canon’s two new bundles of joy. As a point of reference, both cameras have alternate names, so there’s the T5i/700D and the SL1/100D:

Planet 5D: “The main feature of this DSLR appears to be its size – it does have most of the features of the Canon Rebel T5i but doesn’t include the articulating screen but the LCD is a touchscreen.”

Mashable: “One interesting omission, however: No Wi-Fi — a feature that debuted on Canon’s DSLR line last fall in the 6D.”

The Verge: “The smaller body does require a few hardware sacrifices — the SL1 has a smaller battery and grip than the T4i, for instance, and in some ways is even a little harder to hold than a larger camera.”

Techivian: “The 700D [T5i] brings a new mode dial capable of turning 360 degrees, a new ‘upmarket’ body finish and real-time preview of Creative Filters in Live View mode”
