CineGear 2015: Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini & Micro Cameras

If you tried to visit the Blackmagic Booth on the first day of CineGear like we did, then you may have had a bit of trouble seeing anything through the thick, lingering cloud of people that remained all day long. It’s no wonder, as with their newest cameras from NAB on display, everyone wanted to get up close and personal with the URSA Mini and Micro Cinema and Studio cameras.

URSA Mini – $2,995 – $5,495

Introducing URSA Mini, a lightweight miniaturized URSA featuring an incredible 4.6K Super 35 image sensor with global shutter and a massive 15 stops of dynamic range! The super compact and lightweight design is perfectly balanced for handheld use and comfortable enough for all day shooting. That means you get a handheld camera with higher resolution and better dynamic range than most Super 35mm film! URSA Mini shoots up to 60 frames per second, has a super bright 5 inch foldout viewfinder, dual RAW and ProRes recorders and more. You can select from four models of URSA Mini with 4.6K or 4K image sensors and either EF or PL lens mounts.

Blackmagic URSA Mini is designed to be used on feature films, television shows, commercials, indies, documentaries, music videos and more. The stunning quality of its 4.6K sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range lets you capture epic cinematic shots, while its compact size is perfect for solo shoots or smaller crews! You can easily customize URSA Mini with high quality cinema lenses, rails, matte boxes and more. The optional shoulder mount kit features a quick release mounting plate so you can go from handheld to shoulder or tripod in seconds, making it perfect for pickup and run shooting situations. It’s the handheld Super 35mm digital film camera that you can use anywhere and, because it’s an URSA, everything you need is built right in!

Micro Cinema Camera – $995

Introducing the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, a miniaturized Super 16mm, professional digital film camera that is designed to be operated remotely and capture action anywhere! A revolutionary built in expansion port has PWM and S.Bus inputs so you can use a model airplane remote control to operate the camera wirelessly. Imagine adjusting focus, iris and zoom wirelessly! The Micro Cinema Camera is a true digital film camera that features built in RAW and ProRes recording, 13 stops of dynamic range, a global shutter and an MFT lens mount. You get a true digital film camera that can go where no other digital film camera can!

The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is an impossibly small true, professional quality digital film camera that’s perfect for use on quadcopters, as a crash cam, or even hidden on set for reality TV. You can mount it anywhere such as on a skate board or hang glider for spectacular extreme sports shots, to a drone to record panoramic fly overs, or even wear it on a helmet for the most amazing point of view shots! The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera will make your audience say “Wow! How did they get that shot?”

Micro Studio Camera 4K – $1,295

The Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K is an incredibly tiny Ultra HD studio camera that’s perfectly designed for live production. You get a full Ultra HD resolution camera that can be used in HD and Ultra HD video formats and it can be fully controlled from the switcher via the SDI control protocol. Micro Studio Camera 4K includes powerful features such as built in color corrector, talkback, tally indicator, PTZ control output, built in microphones, backup battery, an adaptable MFT lens mount and B4 lens control output. This means Micro Studio Camera 4K is a true studio camera that is dramatically better quality than the biggest and most expensive studio cameras used today.

The small size and completely open design of the Micro Studio Camera 4K makes it perfect for any live multi camera production! It’s virtually invisible and can be hidden just about anywhere on set, giving you the ability to have more camera angles than ever before so you can create a more interesting program. You can even hide them on stage to get incredible shots of live performances or, because they’re so small, safely fly them overhead during sporting events. It can also be used in the studio by rigging it with a professional broadcast lens and a Blackmagic Video Assist for monitoring
