With the announcement of Emmy nominations this morning, we thought we’d focus on the nominations in the various Best Cinematography categories.
It’s interesting to see these nominees listed, as there seems to be so much standout work on a lot of these shows that you almost wish there could be multiple winners. For me, standout nominees listed here deffinitely include Michael Goi, ASC, ISC for ‘American Horror Story: Freakshow’. Goi has worked on the past four season of American Horror Story, and his work never fails to be compelling and engaging, and I frequently find myself getting more caught up in the shot than I do the episode itself.
Game of Thrones is of course no surprise, though it is interesting to see several different DPs and their respective episodes nominated for the same show. Other strong favorites for me include Sam Painter for ‘Going Clear’, Laura Poitras for ‘Citizenfour’ and Marc Smerling for ‘The Jinx’, all nominated for Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming. I remember vividly the numerous drone shots in ‘Going Clear’ and how fascinating it was to watch. ‘Citizenfour’ was also remarkably well shot for something that could have easily looked like a non-fiction ‘Paranormal Activity’, though given Poitras’ track record, is less of a surprise. ‘The Jinx’ was also compellingly shot, with numerous shots adding to the overall uneasy feeling already present in the series.
