LAPPG December: Narrative Editing, AI In Post Production & Holiday Food Drive

The Los Angeles Post Production Group (LAPPG) is holding its next meeting on December 13th at 7pm, bringing Dan Lebental, ACE and media expert Norman Hollyn to discuss editing scenes through narrative point of view and the future of editing and the roles AI and Machine Learning will play respectively. They will also be taking donations for their annual holiday food drive for the Westside Food Bank.

Editing Insights with Dan Lebental, ACE

Dan Lebental, ACE will examine the thought process behind editing scenes through narrative point of view, subtext and economy. He will also discuss the concept of tone and how to develop the overall feel of a movie.

Dan Lebental, ACE is a Hollywood professional editor and has been editing feature films for more than twenty years, working with some of Hollywood’s top movie studios and directors. His long time collaboration with Jon Favreau has yielded hits such as “Elf” and the blockbusters “Iron Man”, “Iron Man 2.” Dan has also edited Marvel’s “Ant-Man” and the forthcoming “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” His versatility across genres includes working on comedies, dramas, thrillers, documentaries, TV projects as represented by more than 20 movies and hundreds of music videos cut over the span of his career. Dan Lebental is a member of American Cinema Editors and the Motion Picture Academy of Arts.

Norman Hollyn: Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of AI in Your Editing Room

AI and Machine Learning have been demonized as taking the art out of our jobs and, in fact, taking away our jobs.  What are people doing with it?  What is the reality of this important new tool?

We are thrilled to have Norman Hollyn return to the LAPPG to discuss the future of editing and the roles AI and Machine Learning will play.

Norman has been described as a “media expert,” a reference to his experience in a wide variety of media types – in both the old media and new media worlds. He is a long-time film, television and music editor (HEATHERS, THE COTTON CLUB, and Oliver Stone’s WILD PALMS, are among his extensive credits) and has just returned from giving a talk at the CILECT Congress on Our New Audiences. He is presently a Full Professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts where he is the Inaugural Holder of the Michael Kahn Chair in Film Editing.
