Panasonic Introduces LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S.

The 12-35 is the first constant aperture zoom from Panasonic for the Lumix line.

Panasonic’s introduction of the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH lens is a bold statement for Micro Four Thirds users. It says Panasonic are serious about supporting the Micro Four Thirds system with professional quality glass for both video and still shooters. Micro Four Thirds is a lens mounting standard shared by Panasonic and Olympus. The sensors are slightly smaller than an APS-C sized sensor, and significantly larger than the sensors on point-and-shoot cameras and mirrorless system cameras such as the Nikon1. In fact, for those of you trying to achieve “the cinematic look”, the sensor size is about half way between 35mm and 16mm. It’s the right size to give you the cinematic look and still give your focus puller a fighting chance.
The addition of the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH adds to an already impressive line of lenses for the Micro Four Thirds system. Panasonic share a close relationship with Leica, meaning that two Leica Summilux lenses are available for the system, along with a variety of other nice prime and zoom lenses. The LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH marks the second time that Panasonic have offered a fast, constant aperture zoom lens for the system. The lens is smaller than your fist. It’s easy to shoot with a GH2 and two or three lenses stashed in your coat pockets. They’re so compact, you’re likely to always carry them, and consequently get more shots. I’ve shot the GH2 extensively on the Field Runner project, and on the Dreaming Awake Project and love it. Here’s a rip from Panasonic’s press release on the lens:

Panasonic is proud to announce a new digital interchangeable standard zoom lens LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-HS12035) (35 mm camera equivalent: 24-70 mm) for the LUMIX G Micro System.
Crystallizing Panasonic’s optical technologies, the “X” lens features superb image rendering for lifelike textures, crisp edge-to-edge contrast, a unique Nano Surface Coating for minimal ghost and flare and natural atmospheres with remarkable transparency.
The new LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. lens offers a versatile zoom range of 12-35mm (35mm camera equivalent: 24-70mm) featuring F2.8 brightness at entire zoom range. It is suitable for capturing a wide range of scenes from dynamic landscape to portrait taking advantage of beautiful defocus or fast shutter speed.
Panasonic’s Nano Surface Coating technology is adopted to minimize the reflection at entire visual light range (380nm-780nm) by applying the extra-low refractive index coating with nano-sized structure on the surface of the lens. It results in the super clear picture with dramatic reduction of ghost and flare.
The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which is newly integrated in the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. effectively compensates for not only small, fast movement but also large, slow one making it easy to shoot super clear shots even in low-lit situations such as in night time or indoors.
Comprising of 14 lenses in 9 groups, the UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lens minimize chromatic aberration while the UHR (Ultra High Refractive) lens realizes high descriptive performance from corner to corner. It features high contrast and resolution from the center to the corner at entire zoom range, making it possible to capture the details of a scenery and a portrait with rich perspective. The inclusion of 4 aspherical lenses that helps achieving the downsizing of lens unit to boast outstanding compactness with approx. 73.8 mm in length and approx. 305 g in weight for high mobility.
It incorporates superior inner focus system, which enables excellent resolution and contrast from full life-size magnification to infinity. The inclusion of stepping motor makes the focusing action smooth and silent for use in both photo and video recording. When mounted on the cameras of LUMIX G Micro System, users can take advantage of the high-speed, high-precision Contrast AF system.
Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth defocus effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. Highly reliable metal mount endures long time use.
Designed to stand against splash/dust with a rubber ring on the lens mount, the sophisticated metallic-finished look of the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. suits the profile of stylish camera body of LUMIX G Micro System.
