 Panasonic’s Press Release:

NEWARK, NJ (September 6, 2016) – Panasonic will introduce a new cinema-ready version of the VariCam 35 at IBC 2016 featuring a jointly-developed Codex recorder capable of uncompressed, 4K RAW acquisition.
The “VariCam Pure” is the latest addition to the company’s family of professional cinematography products. A “co-production” between Panasonic and Codex, it couples the existing VariCam 35 camera head with a new Codex V-RAW 2.0 recorder, ideal for episodic television shows and features.
The V-RAW 2.0 recorder attaches directly to the back of the VariCam 35 camera head. As a result, the camera retains the same Super 35 sensor, 14+ stops of latitude and dual native 800/5000 ISO as the original VariCam 35.
“The new VariCam Pure camera system records pure, uncompressed RAW up to 120 fps onto the industry-standard Codex Capture Drive 2.0 media, already widely used by many camera systems, post facilities and studios,” said Panasonic Senior Product Manager Steven Cooperman. “There is significant demand for uncompressed RAW recording in the high-end market. The modular concept of the VariCam has enabled us to meet this demand.
“We’ve also listened to feedback from cinematographers and camera operators and ensured that the VariCam Pure is rugged, compact and lightweight, weighing just 11 pounds.”
Codex will provide the most efficient dailies and archiving workflow available through its Production Suite. In addition, the Codex Virtual File system means users can transfer many file formats including Panasonic VRAW, Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR.
Using the Codex Capture Drive means a reliable workflow from digital capture to post production. Along with the original camera negative, frame-accurate metadata (such as lens and CDL data) can also be captured, streamlining production and post-production, and delivering time and cost savings.
The V-RAW 2.0 recorder for VariCam Pure is scheduled for release in December 2016 with a suggested list price of $30,000. The camera will be showcased at IBC 2016 at Stand C45, Hall 11.

The Press Release from Codex:

Codex and Panasonic continue their successful partnership with VariCam Pure
London, September 6, 2016 – Panasonic has once again called on the engineering and technical expertise of Codex (www.codex.online) to develop with them a totally-integrated and smaller VariCam camera – the new VariCam Pure digital cinematography camera.
The new Panasonic VariCam Pure is a RAW-only camera that takes the VariCam range to a whole new level. The combination of Codex and Panasonic was proven with the VariCam 35 and Codex V-RAW recorder, used on projects such as Netflix’s Death Note and The OA. So Panasonic, of course, turned to Codex for this next generation camera.
The VariCam Pure is a modular camera solution providing in-camera recording that directly addresses the needs of cinematographers and camera crew who desired a compact but powerful camera system that could be used in any situation.
Michael Bravin, engineering supervisor at Sim Digital in Hollywood, said, “It’s great to see such purposeful product development in the collaboration between Codex and Panasonic. They have teamed-up to not only offer RAW recording for the VariCam 35, but also to raise the bar even higher. By tightly integrating this new V-RAW recorder with the VariCam for a smaller lighter, frankly better, system, we now can more effectively meet the needs of our clients on high end 4K RAW productions.”
This expanded toolkit for digital capture is enabled by Codex’s battle-tested recording media – Codex Capture Drive – providing the gateway to an entire production-to-post workflow via Codex Production Suite. Codex continues to provide one workflow, no matter what camera you shoot with.
“Those who have seen this new camera system have been impressed,” said Codex VP Brian Gaffney, who added, “This combination is a powerful new tool for 4K RAW recording, and is just the kind of camera that studios are looking for to produce 4K content for the cinema or the home. We support camera choices at the front-end with a single workflow that simply and safely moves your data from production into post and beyond.”
Panasonic will showcase VariCam Pure at IBC 2016, Hall 11, Stand C45 and Cinec 2016, Stand 2-B01.
