Join colorist and founder of LightBender, Juan Cabrera, CSI discussing the color grading and finishing workflow he creatively used on the second season of TNT’s The Alienist: Angel of Darkness.
You’ll get to know how Juan built a non-destructive and efficient finishing pipeline, allowing him to be agile and flexible throughout the whole process – conforming, color grading and preparing all the final deliverables of this popular TV series. Juan’s work was recognized with a nomination for best color at last year’s HPA Awards.
About Juan I. Cabrera
Juan started his career in Madrid 24 years ago, working as a VFX Supervisor and Animator. After 11 years in the VFX industry, he evolved his career towards Color and Finishing. His background in Visual Effects helped him immensely with the technical side of color grading and color science, and often blends both worlds when needed – and that’s how he discovered SGO and Mistika Technology. He has worked with Mistika since version one and has been an active beta-tester and has regularly proposed new features since the beginning. This has allowed him to develop a very close relationship with the software, integrating it on every project he has worked on.

Juan has worked with Mistika on major blockbusters like Prometheus, Amazing Spiderman, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, for which he won 2 Advanced Imaging Society Awards. On the television side he has worked on shows like Sony’s StartUp, Microsoft Quantum Break and more recently The Alienist: Angel of Darkness for TNT.
Six years ago Juan opened his own finishing studio, LightBender, where he has three color rooms with Mistika Ultima and two support rooms with Mistika Boutique & Workflows, providing all color and finishing services including advanced formats like 4K, 8K, HFR, HDR, etc. LightBender is Dolby Vision Certified and MPAA Security Compliant. His clients include Sony, Paramount, Microsoft, Netflix, Hulu, THX, and many others.
