Cinematographer and Blackmagic Design Beta Tester Benjamin L. Brown recently produced a three minute short entitled “Falling Apart”. What’s remarkable about this little film is that it was shot entirely with the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4.6K.
According to Brown, he shot the URSA Mini 4.6K using 4.6K RAW 3:1. He shot with an ASA of 800 at 23.98FPS. White balance varied. Although he did shoot a few sequences at 60 FPS, he mainly stayed at 23.98. All the sequences in the video were shot using the Rokinon Cine Lenses which is what he used on “Harbinger Down.”
According to Brown the URSA Mini was solid, and he reports having no issues. There were no issues with CFast cards or file corruption. Here’s more from Brown:
“[The] form factor is impressive and a lot of fun. Easy to move around and not too heavy that you’ll break a sweat setting up shots. I love the image. It’s beautiful. I’m stunned at the dynamic range on this thing. I purposefully put it into situations that I didn’t think it would be able to pull images out of, and it did. Not sure if that’s the best thing to do when you are going to put your shoot up for the world to see, as it opens yourself up to a lot of fun. This is basically my test footage. It’s what I need to know before I take a camera on a gig. If everything was setup perfectly, I wouldn’t be challenged, and the camera wouldn’t be, either. And when I step out into the real world and have a less than ideal situation, problems arise. None happened. This Mini and sensor are stunning.”
Unfortunately for Brown, he has to return this beta model back to Blackmagic Design. However, when I asked him if he intended to purchase a shipping model he replied, “Absolutely.”
